On Canton, a memo sent with the wallet address identifies a deposit, so one Canton wallet can receive funds for many accounts. This article explains memo-based addresses and how to choose a deposit model.
How memo-based addresses work
Fireblocks uses memo-based addresses on Canton, as it does for Cosmos, Stellar, and XRP. Each Canton wallet has a permanent address, the Party ID, and can have any number of additional addresses. A Party ID is the Canton equivalent of a wallet address. Each additional address has its own memo. A memo is a free-text value, so you can route deposits with your own internal scheme.
To add an address with a memo:
Open the Canton wallet in your vault account.
Select Add address. If the wallet already has other addresses, select + Add under Other addresses instead.
Enter a description for the address. Fireblocks generates the memo.
When you share deposit details with a sender, share both the address and the memo. If a deposit arrives without a memo, or with a memo that does not match one of your addresses, the funds still reach the wallet, as on other blockchains in Fireblocks. A deposit without a memo shows an empty memo in the transaction history.
Choose a deposit model
Use one shared Canton wallet, or separate wallets, depending on how you want to separate funds.
One vault account, with a memo per line of business
All deposits go to a single shared Canton address, and the memo identifies each line of business.
You share one address externally, which keeps communication with counterparties simpler.
This model suits a centralized treasury.
You need an internal process to route funds based on the memo.
A vault account per line of business, with a memo per counterparty
Each line of business has its own Canton vault account and address, and each counterparty gets its own memo.
Funds stay separated between business units.
You can set permissions and Policy rules per vault account. See Canton Policy Rules.
This model suits an organization with separate operational or compliance boundaries.
Each vault account with a Canton wallet counts toward the Canton wallet limit. See the wallet limits section in Create a Canton Wallet.
