Use this glossary to understand how main accounts, sub-accounts, trading accounts, testnet environments, Off-Exchange, Orders, and internal transfers work across supported providers. This article consolidates all definitions and capabilities referenced in the Provider Network.
Account hierarchy
Main accounts
Main accounts are the default provider accounts and the gateway between the provider and all other locations in your Fireblocks workspace. Operational routing, funding, and withdrawal rules are described in Connected accounts and balances.
Sub-accounts
Sub-accounts allow you to separate teams, strategies, or risk. Funding, withdrawal routing, visibility rules, and transfer behavior are described in Connected accounts and balances.
Trading accounts
Fireblocks provides visibility and management for supported provider trading accounts, including spot, derivatives, margin, futures, and options accounts, and enables rebalancing between them on supported exchanges. Funding flows, transfer routes, visibility behavior, and API permission requirements are described in Connected accounts and balances.
General trading account definitions
- Spot: Exchange crypto-to-crypto or fiat-to-crypto on a specified spot date for immediate delivery.
- Derivatives: Financial products whose value is derived from an underlying asset Depending on how the product is structured, the product may or may not have the same price as the replicated asset.
- Margin: Trading with leverage by borrowing funds from the exchange. The initial margin is the minimum amount of funds you must deposit to open a position and usually comes with the daily cost of interest.
- Futures: Agreements to trade at a future date for a preset price and quantity as agreed upon during the signing of the contract. An initial margin deposit is needed to initiate the trade.
- Options: Contracts allowing (but not obligating) a buyer to buy or sell an asset at a defined price within the contract’s lifetime. Unlike futures, the holder is not required to buy or sell the asset if they choose not to.
Trading account notes
- Some providers require enabling trading in the API settings.
- Inner-exchange transfers appear in the Audit Log.
- Transfers between trading accounts are not restricted by your Policies.

Testnet support

Internal transfers
Fireblocks supports two types of internal transfers:
1. Trading account transfers (provider-level)
- Transfer funds between trading accounts within the same provider account.
- These transfers are off-chain, instant, and have no network fees. For example, rebalancing between spot and margin accounts, or between futures and spot accounts.
2. Connected account internal transfers (Fireblocks-level)
- Transfer funds between the main account and sub-accounts under the same API key.
- The provider treats this as a withdrawal, but funds remain within your exchange accounts.
Operational transfer routes and restrictions are described in Connected accounts and balances > Internal transfers and rebalancing.
