Overview
This article explains how to create and submit a swap order in the Fireblocks Console, covering same-chain, cross-chain, and off-chain swap types.
Before you begin
Prerequisites depend on the swap type. Make sure the following are in place before creating an order.
| Swap type | Required |
| Same-chain via DeFi | Policy rules configured; vault holds native asset for gas (e.g., ETH on Ethereum), accept provider terms |
| Same-chain via CeFi | Connected provider account; policy rules configured, vault holds native asset for gas (e.g., ETH on Ethereum) |
| Cross-chain via DeFi | Policy rules configured; vault holds native asset for gas (same 3-rule set as same-chain via DeFi), accept provider terms |
| Cross-chain via CeFi | Connected provider account; policy rules configured |
| Off-chain | Connected provider account; policy rules configured |
See Getting started with swap orders and Policy rules for swap orders.
The swap modal
Open the Create swap order modal from the Swap page in the Fireblocks Console. The modal has three tabs — select the one that matches your swap type:
- Same-chain: swap two tokens on the same blockchain via DeFi or CeFi providers
- Cross-chain: Swap digital assets across blockchains via DeFi or CeFi providers
- Off-chain: convert assets held in a connected provider account into a different asset
The modal opens on the tab you last used. Your most recent account and asset selections are prefilled, but amounts are not carried over.
Same-chain swap
Both DeFi and CeFi providers are available for same-chain swaps. The provider shown in the quote details determines the signing steps required.
- Select the Same-chain tab.
- Select the account.
- Under From, select the source token and enter the amount.
- Under To, select the token you want to receive. Tokens not compatible with the selected pair are shown as disabled.
- The best available route is shown by default. To compare routes or see the full fee breakdown, expand the quote details. Review the provider shown under Via and select a different route if needed.
- Optionally, if applicable to that provider, adjust the Slippage tolerance.
- Select Create swap order.
Note:
If there is not enough native asset in the account to cover the network fee, a warning appears in the modal. Make sure the account holds sufficient ETH (or the relevant native asset) before submitting.
If this is the first time you are using a DeFi provider in your workspace, a terms and conditions prompt appears. Review and accept before continuing.
Signing steps: DeFi (direct access providers)
You will be asked to sign one or more on-chain steps on the Fireblocks mobile app. The exact steps depend on the route.
Uniswap Classic
- Swap - Grant allowance: authorizes the smart contract to spend your source token. One-time per token; skipped on subsequent swaps of the same token.
- Swap - Authorize: signs the permit allowance for the swap.
- Swap - Execute: executes the token exchange on-chain.
Note:
Signing must be completed within 30 minutes. If this deadline passes, the swap fails and you will need to start a new order.
UniswapX
- Swap - Grant allowance: authorizes the smart contract to spend your source token. One-time per token; skipped on subsequent swaps of the same token.
- Swap - Execute: signs the permit and authorizes Uniswap to complete the swap on your behalf.
Note:
Quote expiry is 60 seconds. Complete the signing steps promptly — if the quote expires, the swap fails and you will need to start a new order. UniswapX is available on Ethereum, Unichain, Arbitrum, and Base. For swaps on Unichain, Arbitrum, or Base, the quote amount must be larger than $300.
Signing steps: CeFi (account-based providers)
The following steps appear on the Fireblocks mobile app:
- Swap - Fund order: approves the transfer of funds to execute the swap.
The remaining steps run in the background and do not require signing:
- Swap on provider: the provider executes the trade.
- Receive funds: the converted tokens are delivered to your account.
The order status updates to Processing once all signing steps are complete. The status changes to Completed and the received tokens appear in your account.
Note:
If the token you want to receive does not appear in the list, it may not be supported by the provider for that pair, or it may not be enabled in your workspace.
Cross-chain swap
Supported networks
DeFi (direct access providers):
The following networks are currently supported for direct access cross-chain swaps:
Arbitrum One, Base, Binance Smart Chain, Blast, Ethereum, HyperEVM, Optimism, Polygon, Unichain, Worldchain, zkSync
Note:
DeFi cross-chain swaps move the same asset between chains — for example, USDC on Base to USDC on Ethereum. Bridge + swap (for example, USDC on Base to ETH on Polygon) is not supported.
CeFi (account-based providers):
CeFi providers support same-chain and cross-chain swaps across the following networks:
Avalanche C-Chain, Arbitrum One, Base, BNB Smart Chain, Bitcoin, Cardano, Dogecoin, Ethereum, Hedera, Litecoin, Polygon, Ripple, Solana, TRON
The specific pairs available depend on your connected provider. The swap modal shows only the pairs your connected account supports.
Executing a cross-chain swap
- Select the Cross-chain tab.
- Select the account.
- Under From, select the source token and enter the amount.
- Under To, select the asset you want to receive. The selector shows only assets on different chains from your From selection. For CeFi providers, you can also receive a different asset — for example, ETH on Ethereum to BTC on Bitcoin. Tokens not compatible with the selected pair are shown as disabled.
- The best available route is shown by default. Expand the offer details to see other offers from different routes and the full fee breakdown, including provider fee, network fee, and total after fees. Review the provider shown under Via and select a different route if needed.
- Select Create swap order. Your order is checked against your workspace policy rules.
If this is the first time you are using a DeFi provider in your workspace, a terms and conditions prompt appears. Review and accept before continuing.
For DeFi (direct access providers): You will be asked to sign one or more on-chain steps on the Fireblocks mobile app:
- Swap - Grant allowance: authorizes the smart contract to spend your source token. One-time per token per chain; skipped on subsequent swaps of the same token on the same chain.
- Swap - Authorize: signs the permit allowance (ERC-20 tokens only; not required for native assets such as ETH).
- Swap - Execute: executes the bridging transaction on the source chain.
The bridge execution runs in the background. No signing is required from you.
For CeFi (account-based providers): The following steps appear on the Fireblocks mobile app:
- Swap - Fund order: approves the transfer of funds to execute the swap.
The remaining steps run in the background and do not require signing:
- Swap on provider: the provider executes the trade.
- Receive funds: the converted tokens are delivered to your account.
The order status updates to Processing once all required actions are complete. The status changes to Completed once the provider settles the trade and delivers the tokens to your account.
Fees may include: source chain gas fees (Approve + Contract Call), provider fees, aggregator fees (for example, LI.FI), relayer fees covering gas on the destination chain, and a Fireblocks fee. All provider fees are deducted from the quoted output amount and shown in the output token — not in a separate base currency. The full breakdown is visible in the quote details before you confirm.
Off-chain swap
- Select the Off-chain tab.
- Select the connected provider account that holds the assets you want to convert.
- Under From, select the source token and enter the amount.
- Under To, select the token you want to receive. Tokens not compatible with the selected pair are shown as disabled.
- Review the rate and provider shown
- Select Create swap order. Your order is checked against your workspace policy rules.
- Approve the order using the Fireblocks mobile app or API Co-signer.
The provider converts the assets from your connected account balance and delivers the received tokens to your account.
Tracking your swap
All swap orders are visible under Transaction history > Orders in the left navigation panel. Use the Filters button to filter by status, provider, or date. Recent swaps are visible for 48 hours after reaching a final status. See Order statuses for swap orders.
