Polkadot is currently undergoing a network migration, designed to move its core functionality, including staking, governance, and DOT balances, from its Relay Chain to the parachain called Asset Hub. The Polkadot Foundation is aiming, through this change, to simplify the network’s architecture while improving performance and reducing costs for users and service providers.
Background
Historically, Polkadot’s core logic was handled by the Relay Chain. As part of a broader initiative to scale the network and improve usability, these capabilities are now being migrated to Asset Hub, a dedicated system parachain. This change will unify access to assets and staking within a single environment and help streamline integration for ecosystem tools and wallets.
Significance for Fireblocks customers
- No UI or API changes will be implemented. All existing Polkadot functionality will continue to operate seamlessly.
- No action on your side is required to support this migration.
- The existential deposit for DOT accounts will be significantly reduced, from 1 DOT to 0.01 DOT, making it easier for you to manage smaller balances.
- The migration, which is planned to take approximately 8 hours, is expected to cause a planned downtime for DOT deposits and withdrawals during the transition window. We will communicate the exact timeline in advance.
Our Commitment
Fireblocks will fully support the migration in real time, and ensure a smooth transition for all of you.
- A Kusama upgrade is currently scheduled for August 4th, 2025.
- The Polkadot mainnet migration is currently scheduled for September 15th, 2025.
