Overview
Upon creating a new Stellar wallet in Fireblocks, you must deposit an initial 1 XLM into it. This amount is known as the "base reserve." This minimum balance is necessary for maintaining a Stellar account and ensuring the network remains efficient by preventing spam and encouraging responsible use of the blockchain.
Until now, Fireblocks automatically funded your new Stellar accounts with the minimum 1 XLM needed to make the accounts fully operational and visible on the blockchain. As of January 1st, 2024, we will be shifting the responsibility of funding these new accounts to you.
Important:
Note that as of December 19th, 2023, this change is already live on the XLM Testnet.
How to fund your new Stellar account
After creating a new Stellar asset wallet in Fireblocks, in order to make it operational, select it to view its deposit address, and then send at least 1 XLM to that address. You can fund your Stellar Asset Wallet through one of our integrated exchanges, through another wallet in your workspace, or by using an existing, third-party Stellar wallet that you control.
Use an exchange
- Log in to one of our integrated exchanges.
- Make sure you have enough XLM in your exchange account to cover the base reserve (1 XLM).
- Initiate a withdrawal on the exchange by sending the desired amount of XLM to the address of your newly created Stellar account in Fireblocks. Remember, the new account must receive at least 1 XLM in order to become operational.
- Confirm the transaction details and submit the withdrawal request. The exchange will automatically use a "create account" operation when transferring the XLM.
- Once the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, your new Stellar account in Fireblocks will be visible and operational on the Stellar network.
Use another vault account in your workspace
- Go into your desired vault account.
- In this vault, select Withdraw
per the Stellar wallet from which you want to fund your new Stellar wallet.
- Make sure you have enough XLM in your funding Stellar wallet to cover the base reserve (1 XLM) plus transaction fees.
- Fill out the New transfer window with the destination, XLM amount and fee parameters and select Create transfer. Remember, the new account must receive at least 1 XLM in order to become operational.
- Your wallet will create a "create account" operation and submit it to the Stellar network.
- Once the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, your new Stellar account in Fireblocks will be visible and operational on the Stellar network. You can now manage your assets using our crypto custody service.
Use an external Stellar wallet
- Log in to an external Stellar wallet outside of Fireblocks or create a new one. You can use wallets like StellarTerm, Lobstr, or any other wallet that supports the Stellar network.
- Make sure you have enough XLM in your external Stellar wallet to cover the base reserve (1 XLM) plus transaction fees.
- Initiate a transfer in your external Stellar wallet by sending the desired amount of XLM to the address of your newly created Stellar account in Fireblocks. Remember, the new account must receive at least 1 XLM in order to become operational.
- Confirm the transaction details and submit the transaction. Your wallet will create a "create account" operation and submit it to the Stellar network.
- Once the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, your new Stellar account in Fireblocks will be visible and operational on the Stellar network. You can now manage your assets using our crypto custody service.
